About Adopt A Family
The Adopt A Family program has been serving families in need across the state of
Michigan since 1993. In the 21-year history of the program, over 162,000 children
and parents have experienced the joy of Christmas through this special program.
In 2013 close to 3,500 families were served, which represents 16,000 unique individuals.
Families apply and are screened for participation in the program. They must demonstrate
need (income no more than 20% above the poverty line), have children ages 16 and
under and complete an online application at www.voami.org
Sponsors (individuals, families, companies, etc.) support a family for the Christmas
holiday. Sponsors provide at least one new toy and one new outfit for each child
in the family as well as a special Christmas dinner for the family. Many sponsors
provide much more!
Two Ways to Give
If you prefer a personal, hands on experience, through Direct Sponsorship you will
receive a family or senior profile and wish list. Using their information, you do
the shopping and deliver the items to your adoptee! Families range in size from
small families with a single parent or grandparent with one child to families with
multiple children. Based on your ability to sponsor, we will match you with a family
Adopt A Family welcomes cash donations! Each cash donation is combined with other
gifts and benefits additional families for the Christmas holiday. Local retailers
give the VOA deep discounts on items to allow your contribution to reach even further
into our community. Your gift of any amount will help ensure a wonderful holiday
for someone in need.
Every Donation Counts!
- 50 children with a gift item
- 33 children with warm clothing
- 20 families a warm Christmas dinner
- 6 families with an entire holiday experience
Program begins each year in early September and runs through the end of December.
